Great Idea for the Garden…Growing Shrub Plants as Standards

Posted in Landscape and Pool Design - Orange County / LA by solenala August 19th, 2011

Maybe you just do not have the room to allow an ornamental vine/hedge to grow to its proper potential, or maybe you’re just looking for a fresh idea to showcase nature’s beautiful flora…whatever the case may be a unique way of highlighting nature’s already beautiful plants is by training shrubs to grow in a standard tree form.  Many ornamental shrubs would standout significantly when used in standard tree form to display the beauty of the plants bloom, the bougainvillea vine, for example, maintains a tidy appearance as a standard.  Another great plant for this is the hibiscus…

Some tips to get you started:

-          Choose a plant that has a strong center support.

-          Begin training the plants young.  Younger plants grow faster and are more flexible allowing them to be trained to a standard form with less risk of damaging the plant.  The first pruning tends to be on the heavier side and can add a lot of stress to the plant.  A younger plant can bounce back quicker from this stress.

-          Prune the lower branches leaving enough at the top so that the plant is still able to produce enough energy to support itself.

-          Stake and tie the center stem to a firmly staked support.  This will assist the center stem in growing straight and tall. When the standard plant has matured enough the center stake will not be needed.

-          Continue with the pruning.  Make sure to keep the center stem clean.  Clip the top growth occasionally to encourage growth from the top.

-          Keep in mind is that being that the plant is growing from a single stem the standard form is less winter hardy.  If plant is grown in a container then you can bring it in inside in the wintertime if you planted in the ground then you should try to insulate the ground in the winter.

Get creative in your garden…you are not limited to the plants that are listed here.   Any flowering shrub would work..butterfly bush, lilac, hydrangea..you just need to be patient with the result…good luck and happy gardening!

Best Regards,

Plant of the Week: Bougainvillea

Posted in Landscape and Pool Design - Orange County / LA by solenala August 19th, 2011

We are excited to announce that we will be featuring a weekly blog on interesting plant facts.  Every week we will blog about a specific plant that Mitch uses regularly in his designs.  The plants are chosen for aesthetic reasons as well as them being able to thrive well in the Southern California climate. Stay tuned to learn more about the beautiful plants that are used in Solena Landscapes projects…

Bougainvillea

Bougainvillea is bright and ornamental flowering plant with thorny vines that is very suited to growing in Californian climate.  They tend to grow best in bright sun and once established require very little water to thrive.  If overwatered the plant will not flower and may even die from root decay.

Bougainvillea, being a climbing vine, is ideal for use on walls and along fence lines as well as a hedge.  The plant may also be tamed and pruned for use in standard form in containers and hanging baskets.

Fun Fact: Various species of Bougainvillea are the official flowers of Californian cities Laguna Niguel and San Clemente.

Press Link: A Neglected Space Becomes an Outdoor Centerpiece

Posted in Landscape and Pool Design - Orange County / LA by solenala August 5th, 2011

Industry magazine, Landscape Online, has published an article about one of our past award-winning projects.  This particular project came to be when the homeowners became tired of intentionally avoiding their backyard, which had over time turned into a dirt dog run. The family wanting an area they could entertain and relax in contacted Solena Landscape Co. to carry out the construction of the project.  What started out as a barren strip of dirt used only by the family’s dog became a quaint and cozy entertainer’s yard.

This project, located in Long Beach, was awarded “Outstanding Custom Waterfeature” by the California Landscape Contractors Association in 2010.

Ocean Friendly Gardens

Posted in Landscape and Pool Design - Orange County / LA by solenala July 26th, 2011

Solena Landscape Co. has been on the cutting edge of the ‘Green Revolution’ since the beginning.  With a sensitivity toward sustainability and water conservation, we have been designing water-wise landscapes, such as Xeriscape gardens, for almost 20 years.

Solena, in association with the Surfrider Foundation, is also involved with a wonderful new program called Ocean Friendly Gardens (OFG).  The premise behind a true OFG is to design and implement garden spaces that follow the simple strategy of CPR: Conservation, Permeability & Retention.

Conservation:  Of water, energy & habitat

Permeability:  Of soil and surfaces lets water slow down and sink

Retention:  Of rainwater and prevention of wet weather runoff

It has been shown that runoff from gardens and lawns contributes greatly to pollution in our local waters as well as the waste of our precious resource; water.  The goal of the OFG program is to help limit that and provide an interesting and aesthetically pleasing alternative.  In an effort to ‘conserve’ cost, volunteer help is occasionally used to make the program affordable to everyone.  You can learn more about that by visiting the Surfrider Foundation website @ www.hsbsurfrider.org.

Recently, Solena has completed two exciting OFG’s in the city of Huntington Beach.  The first was a teaching garden in conjunction with Huntington Beach High School.  Owner of Solena Landscape, Mitch Kalamian, directed the student of a class on sustainability on the proper techniques of installing an OFG and gave a lesson on the importance of keeping the carbon footprint of each garden contained.

The second garden was a private residence.  Landscape designer Kalamian was brought in to come up with a concept that would complement the lifestyle of the homeowner.  The resulting design features a unique blend of succulents and groundcovers in various colors and textures as well as a dry creek bed, rainbarrel to capture excess rain water, a soaker hose and recycled concrete retaining wall.

Homeowner Seth Matson was ecstatic with the results, saying “We love our new garden and have had dozens of neighbors stop by to ask about the unique layout and choice of plants.  We have a lot of fun explain what an OFG is and showing off its rain barrel and succulents.  We really are trying to be environmentally conscious and Solena and Mitch, as well as the volunteers, really worked hard to make our dream a reality”.

Landscape tips for Summertime

Posted in Landscape and Pool Design - Orange County / LA by solenala July 6th, 2011

Summer is officially here and with it, the gorgeous weather Southern California is famous for.  The longer days are warmer, brighter and we are spending more time outdoors.  Whether that time is spent lazing around in the pool or lounging in your yard, wouldn’t you want the surrounding landscape to look amazing so you can sit back and enjoy?

Here are some tips to help you accomplish just that:

Plan your space. Make note of how you want your yard to look. Sketch your yard and/or list all the ideas you have.  Differentiate between your wants and needs.  Take some time to figure out what you will need and how much of it you will need.  This will not only give you an idea of what you’re budget should be but also help you figure out whether you will be able to complete the project all at once or should complete it in phases.

Fertilize plants. To ensure that your lawn and plants grow to its full potential apply fertilizer regularly.

Clean up Flora. Prune trees and shrubs as necessary.  Deadhead flowers.  Apply post emergent weed control as needed to any everyday yard plants and lawn.

Healthy plants are happy plants. Choose plants that are native to the climate of Southern California. Inspect plants for abnormalities, diseases or insects and treat immediately.  Consult with an expert as they can teach you how to take preventative measures.  Make sure your plants are getting adequate water.  Overwatering is just as bad as drought.  When watering, make sure you water slow and deep as it promotes deeper root growth, and helps the overall health of your plants.

Adjust your Irrigation System. Make adjustments to watering times as necessary. Watering your lawn and plants before sunrise to lessen water lost to evaporation and daytime winds. Shaded or protected areas may need less water than other areas. Check your sprinkler system for broken or misaligned heads and drip emitters and fix or adjust as necessary.

Hardscape elements. Clean and treat hardscape as necessary.  Best way to clean your patio for the summer season would be to power wash or acid wash the hardscape.  Make sure you keep your water features, pools and spas included, clear of debris and maintain proper water and chemical levels.

A simple way to take care of it all is with our exclusive 5 point Perfect Garden Program.    Carried out by our trained crews, the Perfect Garden Program is designed to keep your yard looking as beautiful and manicured as the day it was finished. We stay on top of its’ ever-changing needs and keep it in tip-top shape.  Read more about it here.

Your yard—as with anything else—needs regular maintenance to prevent larger (and more expensive) problems down the road. And there is no charge for our 5-point inspection, so call today to schedule yours and have our crews at your house next week…714-960-8955. We’ll have your yard looking great in no time…and you’ll be the envy of the entire neighborhood this summer.

“Asian Contemporary” themed pool & spa in Huntington Harbor

Posted in Landscape and Pool Design - Orange County / LA by solenala June 27th, 2011

I designed this “Asian Contemporary” themed pool & spa to compliment the updates of this mid-century style house in Huntington Harbor.
The ledgestone wall at the end of the pool serves two purposes; hiding the pool equipment and giving the patio a focal point. The trickling water down it’s face provides the space a serene sound and Zen feel.
Although I didn’t adhere to all of the principles of Feng Shui, the use of fire and water (and stone and wood) in the landscape allow the Chi to flow freely and make this small yard feel open and energized.

Xeriscape: Creating a Water-wise landscape

Posted in Landscape and Pool Design - Orange County / LA by solenala May 27th, 2011

In a time of increasing environmental awareness, more people are looking to creating more eco friendly gardens and implementing water conservation practices.  One way of creating a low-water eco friendly landscape is by Xeriscaping.

There are many benefits of creating a Xeriscape landscape.  First, it greatly lowers consumption of water. Watering requirements in a xeriscape garden are low and can be met with simple irrigation systems.  There is little to no turf, which leads to less fossil fuel consumption by gas mowers.   Maintenance is minimal in Xeriscape landscapes aside from the occasional pruning and weeding.  Eliminates the need for fertilizers or pesticides by using plants native to your area. Sufficient nutrients are provided by healthy organic soil.  A good Xeriscape landscape can raise property values that can offset the cost of installation.

There are 7 Principles of Xeriscaping

1. Plan

Create a diagram, drawn to scale, showing the key elements of your landscape: house, driveway, patio, existing trees, property, etc.  Take measurements of all these elements and note on the plan.  Using this base plan create a”planting plan”.  While creating your planting plan, keep in mind the fundamental element of Xeriscape design is water conservation. Some other considerations: Noting areas of sun and shade will help you establish zones of differing water needs. Make the most of your water use by grouping plants with similar watering needs.

2. Soil amendment

Ideally, the soil used for your plants should simultaneously store water and drain quickly. This is achieved by increasing the amount of organic material in your soil and keeping it well aerated. Most plants will benefit from the use of compost, which will help the soil retain water. Some desert plants prefer gravel soils instead of well-amended soils.

3. Efficient irrigation

Use irrigation methods that water the plants in each area most efficiently, whether it be by hand or with an automatic sprinkler system. Never water during the day to reduce water lost to evaporation. If you have an automatic sprinkling system, adjust your controller to accommodate weather conditions. Install a rain sensor to shut off the device when it rains.

4. Use appropriate plants

One key to xeriscaping is using native plants because they are most adapted to your climate.  When planning where your plants will go, keep in mind those different areas of your yard receives differing amounts of light, wind and moisture.  Group plants that have similar light and water requirements and place them in an area that matches.

Also, when planning the layout of your plants try hydrozoning, or organizing plants in your garden based on watering needs.  Place the plants that have a higher need for water closer to the water source and  as you move further away place plants that require less water.

5. Mulch

Adding mulch to your plants helps retain moisture in the soil and block out weeds.

6. Irrigate

The goal of xeriscaping is water conservation.  To prevent over-watering, use soaker hoses and drip-irrigation systems, which deliver water directly to the base of the plants which also helps reduce moisture loss from evaporation. They deliver the water at a slower rate, which encourages water absorption at the root. Generally, it is best to water deeply and less frequently.

7. Maintenance

One of the great benefits of having a Xeriscape garden is it being low-maintenance. Keeping the weeds from growing up through the mulch may require some attention. Thickening the layer of mulch will help. Turf areas should not be cut too short – taller grass is a natural mulch which shades the roots and helps retain moisture. Avoid overfertilizing.

You might also want to try having a rain barrel out in your yard.  A rain barrel is a large container kept outside for collecting rain water.  It has spout attached at the bottom that a hose can be connected to and a screen at the top to keep debris out.  It can be place underneath a downspout or can be accompanied by a rain chain that guides the rain into the barrel.  There are many different avail able rain barrels out now ranging in material from plastic to clay and ranging in style from utilitarian to more decorative.
